How Do You Clean A Showerhead?

If the water from your shower spurts and sprays unpredictably and unevenly, or if the water pressure from your showerhead has disappeared, it could be an indication that there is a clogging up of the normal water passageways of the shower filter.

The build-up of mineral deposits is what’s keeping the showerhead from working at its optimum. These mineral deposits are visible in the form of dust, dirt, and grime at the divots. To unclog the showerhead from mineral deposits, you only need household cleaning agents and some patience.

How to clean a showerhead with vinegar

White vinegar is essentially a chemical liquid produced when ethanol and acetic acid bacteria are fermented through processes. White vinegar as a cleaner is 100 percent natural, environmentally friendly, and cheap.

When used as a cleaning agent white vinegar can cut through grease, hard water stains and eliminate soap scum. White vinegar is also a great disinfectant able to deodorize as well as kill mold, bacteria, and germs thanks to the acetic acid in vinegar.

Cleaning the showerhead can be done regardless of whether you use a handheld showerhead or a wall-mounted showerhead. Here are the steps to clean either of the two types.

Handheld Showerhead

Screw off the showerhead from the arm pipe that extends from the wall.  Use a wrench to unscrew the showerhead, taking care not to ding the shower arm or showerhead.  You can wrap the showerhead  using a rag if you are concerned about scratching or dinging the plumbing.

Step 2

The next step involves the  use of home remedies like soaking the showerhead in white vinegar overnight. The acidity of the vinegar will dissolve the scales.

Carefully place the scaled showerhead and let it soak for 24 hours. A lot of people also have good results by heating up the white vinegar first.

Step 3

The next step involves the  use of home remedies like soaking the showerhead in white vinegar overnight. The acidity of the vinegar will dissolve the scales.

Carefully place the scaled showerhead and let it soak for 24 hours. A lot of people also have good results by heating up the white vinegar first.

Step 4

Then  use a nylon brush to gently brush off the loosened scales. During the procedure use a pair of gloves to avoid direct skin contact with the chemical. You could also use a toothpick to poke through the remaining mineral deposit and debris.

When you have scrubbed off the deposits, run water over the showerhead backwards, to clean off all of the remaining deposit from the showerhead.

Step 5

If there are stubborn lime deposits on the showerhead filter, you can repeat the procedure by further soaking the shower head in vinegar. There is no problem  performing this task again and again.

Step 6

Remove the old Teflon tape attached to the shower pipe and replace it with a new layer.
Two or three wraps are enough.

Carefully reattach the cleaned showerhead onto the threads and hand tighten firmly.

Seeing that your showerhead has been cleansed, you should try to make this happen at least every 3 months a year to keep the product in tip top shape.

Wall mounted showerheads

If removing the showerhead from the wall is not possible: Top off a plastic handbag using white vinegar.  Utilize a scoot to tie up or another fastening strategy to attach the handbag to the showerhead. The bag must stay on the showerhead… enveloping it for 24 hours.

How to clean a showerhead filter

Many KDF shower filters require routine backwashing maintenance to flush out impurities. The carbon filters tend to clog quickly reducing the overall flow of water during your shower forcing you to prematurely replace the entire filter cartridge.

Simply start by extracting the filter screen. Then you can use a toothpick to take out as much of the gunk as you can. Then run cold water to flush out the impurities.

Is vinegar better than CLR?

CLR Bathroom Cleaner is a fantastic showerhead cleaner that does a great job of wiping out the stains and descaling. It also does a good job with soap scum, toilet stains, and cleaning the bathroom.

The previous CLR Cleaner was a very strong acid and could cut through just about anything. It also required a bit more care and prep work before breaking it out. The  CLR Bathroom Cleaner is also strong, but not that quite as dangerous.

What it lacks in raw cleaning power, it makes up in its ability to be used around the home without hurting your family. It requires less scrubbing than white vinegar and claims to be more environmentally friendly, which is always a plus!

Lemons: Use as a natural bacterial combatant and acidic cleaner to clean the showerhead and all of your bathroom fixtures.

Borax: As an all-in-one bathroom cleaner, sodium borate cleans walls and floors, deodorizes, and inhibits the growth of mold on most of your bath fixtures as well as showerheads and walls.

Vegetable-based soap: Available in liquid, flake, or bar form, it will clean your bathroom fixtures and all of your high-quality, luxury plumbing products.

Tea tree oil: As an amazing deodorizer tea tree oil disinfects the bathroom and all its fixtures. It thoroughly cuts through stains and builds up mold and mildew on your showerhead and plumbing products quickly.
